Confirmation

Goal

Our Confirmation program is to provide our students with an understanding of what it means to live in the world as a Christian. When we join the church or affirm our baptism, we are making a promise to live as part of a community of faithful people. The choices we make, the options we choose, the values we hold are then shaped by our understanding of what it means to live as a disciple of Jesus in community with other disciples. One way to describe our choices in life is known as practices of faith. We practice our faith like we practice our part for a play or our baseball game, or a delicate surgery. Practice implies an ongoing attempt at living the life of faith and growing more deeply in our love of God and each other. Confirmation consists primarily of an exploration of various practices of faith by combining all class discussions and working with an individual Mentor. The goal then is that at the end of the course, our Confirmands will have become familiar with a variety of ways in which people practice their faith as they live faithful lives and that our student’s lives will be strengthened and enriched.

Leaders

The Confirmation class is led by Pastor Jeff and Marge Baltz with the assistance of the Mentors.

Who is Confirmation for?

Confirmation is open to students entering the eighth through the twelfth grades. What is a Mentor? Mentors are selected by students. If a student doesn’t have an idea for whom they would like to ask, we will make suggestions. Mentors are adults who are not a relative of the student and who are not the parent of another student currently in the Confirmation Class. Mentors must attend worship regularly (3 out of every 4 Sunday’s a month (or at least willing to make that commitment to their Confirmation student for the duration of Confirmation). Mentors must complete the safe church volunteer program as practiced at St. John’s. Confirmands and mentors will decide on a day and time to meet to do ther work together that will work for both of them. Resources: Students will be provided with the book Way to Live: Christian Practices for Teens. During the course of the year you and your mentor will explore each of the practices in the book. Students will be asked to discuss how they live out the practices in their life with their mentors and mentors will be expected to share the practices they have found important in their own lives.
